this Recipe

When feeding a large family, you find creative, healthy, and cost-saving ways to avoid mainstream grocery stores when baking and making things from scratch on the homestead, such as making homemade peanut butter that is oil-free and low in sugar.

Making peanut butter is simple and easy—it takes only 10 minutes. I share my favorite recipe in my Back to Basics book. There is nothing like fresh homemade peanut butter on fresh bread!

How to Choose the Best Peanuts for Peanut Butter:

  • Roasted Peanuts: Roasted peanuts are the base of any excellent peanut butter. Roasting brings out the rich, nutty flavor and enhances the natural oils, making it smooth and creamy.
  • Honey-Roasted Peanuts: Honey-roasted peanuts are an excellent choice for a touch of sweetness. They add a subtle sweetness and flavor depth, making it irresistible.
  • Raw Peanuts: Roasted in the oven. If you prefer to buy bulk raw peanuts, start with raw peanuts and roast them yourself in the oven. This method lets you achieve the perfect roast level and flavor profile for your peanut butter.

Tools Needed to Make Peanut Butter:

  • Food Processor: A food processor is essential for making homemade peanut butter. It blends the peanuts into a smooth, creamy consistency. Ensure your food processor is powerful enough to handle nuts and run for several minutes without overheating.
  • Quart Size Mason Jar: Once your peanut butter is ready, a quart-size mason jar is the perfect vessel for storage. Its airtight seal ensures your homemade peanut butter stays fresh for longer, giving you peace of mind. Moreover, mason jars are a breeze to clean and reuse, making your homemade peanut butter experience even more enjoyable.

What is the Process of Making Peanut Butter?

  • Roast the Peanuts: If using raw peanuts, roast them in the oven until golden brown and fragrant. Roasting peanuts takes about 15-20 minutes at 350°F. Let them cool completely before processing.
  • Process the Peanuts: The peanuts will go through several stages: from chopped to crumbled, to a thick paste, and finally, to smooth, creamy. Depending on your food processor's power, this process takes 5-10 minutes.
  • Store the Peanut Butter: Once the peanut butter reaches your desired consistency, transfer it to a quart-size mason jar, seal it tightly, and store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh.
